Conjuring 2 - Film Review
Conjuring 2 is a horror film, with the theme of inescapability, made 2017 which is based off of a true event that happened in the 70s, it contains a lot of the typical camera shots and use of music that is used a lot in recent horror films.
There is a shot at the beginning of the film when a medium enters another parallel field, that features a mirror, and on one side is the woman, and on the other a man holding a shot gun. the use of the mirror creates a split between the characters and suggests different dimensions. It could also represent the characters feeling unsure about proceeding with the seance, as well as foreshadow her link with danger and evilness. The use of the shotgun in the mans hand creates fear among the audience and slowly builds up tension and allows the viewer to wonder if its going to be used. The scene also includes eerie music playing in the back ground to further make the viewer feel uneasy, as well as whispering voices to suggest there's a paranormal aspect to it. Low lighting is also used to create mystery. In this scene there is the use of jumpcut editing between the woman in both dimensions, emphasising the separation and difference between the fields.
A bit further on in this scene, there is a shot where she changes setting to the basement - which is generally considered a the scariest part of a house - and once again a mirror is used to create tension. The camera has a medium shot of the woman looking front on in the mirror, showing the villain behind her. The music remains calm as the camera pans left to show no one behind her, flickers back and forth a few times before quickly pannkng right to present the villain in from of her. The music blast loud in this moment to create a jumpscare. The actress has a look of terror on her face and is hyperventilating to emphasis her fear.
