Comparison between short films & Get off my land and Ralph

Ralph and Get off my land Comparison.

Ralph is a short film that features a young man who has travelled to france in search of his love interest, and focuses on the idea of isolation. Whereas Get off my land is a short film about a couple taking a hike through a woodland area, in which they come across some private land that they cannot cross, the genre being dark comedy.
There are several points throughout Ralph that show the theme of isolation, starting from when he steps off the train at the beginning. There is a wide shot with ralph, our protagonist, standing in the middle with nobody standing on the platform next to him to show that he is all alone in this foreign country. This foreshadows the rest of the film. Throughout the whole film everyone, with the exception of Ralph, is speaking french, which is another way that he feels isolated from everyone else. There are also no subtitles to translate and so by doing this, the viewer also feels isolated.
At the beginning of Get off my land, the camera shows two peoples feet walking on a field, the first - a woman - wearing walking boots and the other - a man - wearing trainers. This suggests that the woman was prepared for the hike, most likely having done similar things multiple times before, whereas the man was unprepared and not in his usual domain, like a fish out of water. This is similar to how the boy in Ralph felt after stepping off the train into France, being in an unfamiliar place yet having to press forward. In Get off my land the man lets out a sigh, emphasising that he doesn't want to be there, and is only there for the woman, whereas in Ralph, despite being alone in a foreign place, he wants to be there to find the girl.
In both get off my land and Ralph there are sections that suggest there are barriers preventing them from reaching their partner. In Get off my land, it's a physical fence that the man is fussy about climbing over, complaining that "it's a bit wobbly", which could be metaphorical for an emotional barrier that he cannot cross, which is also suggested by the tension between the couple.
Whereas in Ralph the hypothetical barrier is the faulty number that he has to contact the girl, preventing him from contacting her. However, unlike in in Get off my land, the boy is determined to to break that barrier and try all possible number in order to contact her, showing his unrequited love.

  1. Mya this is a good start and it shows that you have enthusiasm and good level of knowledge about the film concepts and topics. You successfully compare and contrast themes and genres throughout the piece and use film specific terminology and mostly it is sophisticated. Going forward ensure that when proof reading you check for elements of CCCEO and make sure that your writing is clear and maybe use pictures to illustrate or and evidence your points. Do you think that you have used enough if any context? Try using a conclusion to summarise you thoughts to the reader. Well Done!
